SWING +
SWING
Swing dancing is an African American social dance style originating from 1930s Harlem, New York. It encompasses both partner and solo dancing. Swing celebrates the joy and self expression of the jazz age! If you love the music of the 1930s big bands like Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, this is the place to be. You will learn how to take this toe tapping music and swing out to it!
We'll be taking inspiration from the Harlem originators to the modern day innovators! Come and check out some classic swing grooves!
Swing - Solo Jazz
The solo side has deep roots in tap dance traditions and you can see that in its rhythmical style. In these classes you can expect to learn classic choreographies from the 1930s, work on your improvisation skills and have loads of fun expressing yourself to this captivating music.
Open Level: Everyone is welcome! From complete beginners to dancers from other backgrounds. It's full on chaos mode and a whole lotta fun! Each move is taught from scratch and you'll get loads of styling tips to help get that Swing aesthetic.
Level 1: For complete beginners to those with just a bit of experience. We'll be taking you through the ABC of Authentic Jazz. Teaching you basic steps and routines to get you to a comfortable level with your solo Jazz and Improv.
Level 2: You know the basics, you got the Shim Sham down and you're looking for the next challenge. You've done the beginners course and you want to expand your dancing. Or you're a social dancer looking to be able to express yourself better to the music.
Swing - Partnered
Partnered swing dancing, sometimes called 'Lindy Hop' is all about communicating with your partner and connecting through rhythm. Unlike West Coast Swing or more modern styles which have developed towards a focus on shapes and spins, Swing is all about footwork rhythms and groove. These classes are gender neutral meaning anyone of any gender can lead or follow and we actively encourage you to learn both roles.
Introduction to Swing dance Course - This is the place to start if you've never done any dancing before or would like to learn at a relaxed pace. Each month will have a specific topic, so if you've done this course before check in with Thomas/Aurore to make sure you're not getting a repeat.
Level 1 - This is for beginners to swing dancing, we focus on the basic rhythms and lead follow skills. Each week we will teach the footwork rhythm from scratch and then build from there. You don't need to have any previous knowledge to come along!
Level 2 - So you've done the beginners course, maybe you've started going to socials. Let's up the challenge level, learn more moves and start getting some styling and variations in our feet. This is for dancers who have been coming to class for a while and ideally know 6 count, 8 count and some Charleston.
Swing - Soft Shoe Tap
A brief introduction to Tap dancing in the context of a Lindy Hop dancers. Open to both new and experienced dancers, the class will cover some of the basic tap steps and then learning how to put them into our Solo Jazz and Partner Dancing. Please don't bring any Tap Shoes, this is a soft shoe class. Recommended a hard and flat sole.SWING - Solo Jazz
