Born in Taiwan and grew up in Hong Kong, Shirley Pu started ballet training at the age of five. Training with different teachers, including Louis Strike-Beacon, Sit Ching Wah and Tang Min, allows her to foster her ballet techniques.

She was awarded all with Distinction in Royal Academy of Dance Classical Ballet Examinations from Graded 2 to Advanced 2. She has been awarded the Tsinforn C. Wong Memorial Scholarship for 6 years and the Dr. David S H Chu LLD, JP Scholarship in 2007 to train in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts between 2006 and 2008.

In 2010, she was invited to be a Community Cultural Ambassador and presented Dancing Keys with Hong Kong Ballet Education and Outreach Department in local communities. She was admitted to the three-year full-time diploma programme of Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow as one of the first Hong Kong ballet students and graduated in 2013. She was in the class of Vera Potashkina and Irina Pyatkina. Pu participated in many performance productions, including Nutcracker with Hong Kong Ballet (2003), Don Quixote with Mariinsky Ballet (2010) and the Graduation Performance with the Bolshoi Ballet (2013).
